Any home improvement project can be overwhelming, simply because of all the details. At Altra Home Décor here in Phoenix, we understand. But even though we’ve all seen those “bathroom fails” memes, remodeling the space doesn’t have to be overwhelming. See below for a few thoughts about how to approach a bathroom remodel, to get your ideas flowing and help you keep track of some of the details.

Create a Plan for Your Remodel

If you’re making big changes, be sure to plan well and include aesthetic components as well as functional features. For example:

  • Be sure to leave space for storage. If you have enough room, add a closet; otherwise, large cabinets can also give you ample storage and can add to the custom look of your new bathroom.
  • Position sinks so they are easily accessible. Porcelain sinks are the most common and versatile, but don’t be afraid to consider other styles and unique accessories. Stainless steel, granite, and copper sinks can add a luxurious look to your bathroom.
  • Decide where you want to hang towel bars and mirrors early on, so that you can add extra blocking where needed before you finish the walls. If you can, mark potential spots with painter’s tape, and then adjust the locations based on comfort.
  • Bring some nature into the space by using real stone in your shower or on the floor or even on the walls. Plants can do wonders in a bathroom as well, especially if you’ve got good light.

Consider Your Window Treatments

If your bathroom has a window or two, be sure to select the window treatment that will match your new aesthetic as well as guarantee the level of light filtering and privacy control you prefer.

  • Hunter Douglas EverWood® Alternative Wood Blinds work well in bathrooms because they hold up to moisture and damp heat. They are available in a number of premium crisp white and off-white colors. They are easy to operate and clean-up is a quick dusting.
  • For a classic type of bathroom, consider Vignette® Modern Roman Shades by Hunter Douglas to add elegance and sophistication. If your bathroom has warm tones, select an earth-tone fabric with subtle variations, to pick up the colors in your bath tile and cabinetry. For cool tones, select something from the gray family or slate blue.
  • For cute fabrics, a café curtain-style window treatment can be the perfect finishing touch. Hang the café curtain on the lower half of the window to ensure privacy, and you’ll still get plenty of light.
