Thoughts for Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning

Although cleaning has been on lots of people’s minds for a while now, spring is a great time to address some of the areas we don’t normally tackle. At Altra Home Décor serving the greater Phoenix area, we like to help our customers with ideas on how to take care of some of those projects. Read on for more!

Forgotten Areas

We’re all pretty good with cleaning the surfaces of our homes, but there are other areas many folk forget about. For example, cutting boards can harbor some gross bacteria. Now’s a great time to disinfect yours—and to consider doing it more frequently. An as you’re cleaning door handles and other frequently touched surfaces, don’t forget light switches and TV remotes—both of which are touched by many hands quite often.

Things to Maintain

Too often, people neglect the batteries in their smoke or carbon monoxide detectors until the 2 a.m. chirping becomes the reminder. As part of your spring cleaning routine, if you haven’t changed your batteries for a while, take the time to do it now. Also change any filters that regularly get filled. Clean out the gutters and be sure that they’re flowing well. And spend some time with your dryer vent—clear it of dust and lint.

Kitchen Appliances

The oven and fridge can get pretty gross, so why not clean them now? Read your appliance guide books for best practices. In the fridge, be sure to clean the bottom, where everything drips, and don’t forget to pull it from the wall and clean up any dust bunnies there and beneath the unit.

Your View Outside

Grime can collect on both the inside and outside of the window, which then impedes the view. If you’re able to access the exterior of your windows, clean them, and be sure to give the interior windows a scrub as well. Remove your screens and get them shipshape too! And now’s a great time to do some maintenance on your window treatments. You can dust blinds and shades, and vacuum treatments like Silhouette® Window Shadings using the brush attachment. Use compressed air to clean out cellular shades such as Duette® Honeycomb Shades. If your aluminum or faux wood blinds (such as Everwood® Alternative Wood Blinds or Modern Precious Metals® Aluminum Blinds) are particularly grimy, you can remove them and clean them with lukewarm water in a bathtub or sink. Reinstall the treatment while it’s still damp, and lower it to let it completely dry. Once it’s all done, be sure to appreciate your view outside!
