Earth tones are both trendy and classic, and they can make a space warm and inviting. And, although color can seem intimidating, at Altra Home Décor serving the greater Phoenix area, we have a few ideas for how to make it easier. So if you’ve been thinking of adding earth tones to your home, read on, and be sure to speak with one of our representatives for ideas about your unique space.

The Case for Adding Earth Tones

Natural colors can add a sense of balance and calm to a home, creating a space that welcomes. The colors of nature are contemporary, friendly, and inviting. Earth tones are most commonly found in living rooms and family rooms, the places where people usually gather in a home, but they also work well in bedrooms and kitchens.

Bringing in Earth Tones

You’ll find a wide variety of colors that fall under the “earth tones” label, and landing on the combination that works best for you could take a little experimentation. To start, choose a palette you like, selecting colors that will pair well. Popular earth tone palettes include tan with forest green, ivory with terracotta, deep brown with charcoal, dusty mauve with beige, and red brick with ashy gray. When you add your selected palette, start by mimicking the actual world—use muted colors from the outdoors, like warm browns (think dirt) with olive (think fall leaves). Stay away from colors that are glossy or shiny, because they’ll look unnatural. Be sure that your larger pieces, such as a rug or bedding, are in the muted tones.

Window Fashions Play a Role

Earth tones will pop more when you add texture, which can come from items made with burlap or that are woven. Adding layers, such as side panels beside existing window treatments, will make the space feel intentional and will add visual interest. Hunter Douglas offers a wide variety of window treatments that can complement or add to earth tones. For a natural look, consider Provenance® Woven Wood Shades, which are made from reeds, woods, grasses, or bamboo and which filter light beautifully. Vignette® Roman Shades are available in over 25 fabric and color choices and will add a sense of elegance and style. And to layer your window, choose side panel fabrics from our custom drapery options, where you’ll also find coordinating hardware and accessories that will tie the entire look together.
