Understanding Light Bulb Selection

light bulb

Today, lighting is one of the most changed elements of design we have, so it’s good to learn about the options. Many people are familiar with (and most comfortable with) the old incandescent bulb that’s no longer being manufactured. That bulb, however, wastes 90% of its energy as heat, not light. The new LED (Light-Emitting Diode) bulbs, however, are at least 75% more efficient than the traditional incandescent light bulb.

How to Select LED Bulbs

There are many different LED bulbs out there, and they will create different light options in your home. You need to find the right one for your lifestyle. One way is to buy several LED bulbs, and try them in your laps. Take before and after pictures so you can refer to the results later. Also remember these things:

  • Colors like green, teal, blue, indigo and purple would look best with lights that are cool
  • Colors like magenta, red, red-orange, orange, gold, and yellow are warm, and using a warm light bulb is usually the way to go
  • The lampshade also makes a difference. If it is gold, a cool light bulb is the better choice

Remember Light From the Windows

The direction your window faces will affect the type of light it lets in.

  1. If it’s south or west facing, warm light will arrive.
  2. If the window is east or north facing, cool light will enter the window.

To control the light entering the window, consider the type of window treatment that will be best. The materials and opacities you choose will provide different effects. A semi-opaque fabric in a Duette® Honeycomb Shade will soften the light. Blinds with louvers like Heritance® Hardwood Shutters will allow you to tilt the light up or down. The natural fibers used in Provenance® Woven Textures will filter light gently.
