Make Use of the Attic

Homes that have attics frequently have an untapped zone of space that is just gathering dust. If used well, the attic could become a gem in your home that you’ll wonder how you ever lived without. At Altra Home Décor here in the Phoenix area, we have a few ideas of what you might do with your attic if that space is available to you. Read on to learn more!

Options to Make Over Your Attic

You might be surprised to find that, with just a little elbow grease, you could transform your attic into a space you might want to spend a lot of time in. After you’ve checked into your local building codes, gotten any needed permits, and had an HVAC company ensure that your ductwork is in order, you can start to dream about your new room. Here are some things to consider:

  • Reading nook. Many people dream of that quiet reading nook away from the rest of the household. Your attic could become that haven! Just get a comfy bench, a side table, some accessories, and a reading lamp. If your attic has sloped ceilings, use lower furniture and smaller artwork.
  • Rentable room. Turn your attic to a cute bedroom to rent to vacationers and earn a little extra each month. If the attic is big enough, you could even convert it to a studio apartment, with an economy kitchen, a half bath, and a sleeping area.
  • Luxurious bathroom. This area could become that spa-like retreat of your dreams! Even if you don’t go all-out with luxury, adding an extra bath to your home could increase its overall value.
  • Personal walk-in closet. If your home is short on closet space, you can change that by creating the closet of your dreams right above your head. Paint the walls a clean white, and add a full mirror, a dresser, and a changing stool. Then just arrange your clothes the way you want, and you’ve got your private closet space.

Don’t Forget Window Treatments

Attic windows need covering too! Consider light control, UV ray protection, energy efficiency, and privacy, especially you’ve turned it into an apartment, a bathroom, or a dressing room. To insulate well and keep the outside air out, consider treatments such as Duette® Honeycomb Shades, Sonnette® Cellular Roller Shades, or Solera® Soft Shades. If your attic has a skylight (or if you add one), check out Somner® Custom Vertical Blinds or Vertical Solutions® Vertical Blinds. And if you really want to kick the look up a notch, think about side panels from the Hunter Douglas Design Studio™.
