Decorating Your Home From the Floor to Windows

Tile and Stone Flooring

Sometimes, people wait until they’re ready to sell their home before they actually decorate it. They might think they’ll only be in the home for a short time, or they’re daunted by the sheer volume of the task. At Altra Home Décor here in Phoenix, we’re happy to give you a few tips.

Start From the Floor Up

If your home has a mish-mash of different flooring in different rooms, it might seem chopped up and busy. Decide whether you want hardwood, laminate, tile, or carpeting. Then decide on color and texture. Remember, flooring is expensive. If you can’t do it all at once, keep the color similar at least throughout the downstairs area. Hardwood is usually the best way to go because it doesn’t show wear and tear like carpeting, and most people can get large area rugs to warm it up.

Do the Walls Next

With paint, you can add your personal style to your home. Many people like to keep the hallway a neutral color with any rooms visible from the front door working together in look. The back of the house or upstairs can be a little more creative with color. Every paint manufacturer has a good, better, and best line of paint. Buying the better paint may cost more but, in the long run, it will cut down on your labor. One good coat is a lot less expensive than several bad ones.

Finish With the Windows

Window treatments add beauty, provide privacy, control light, and offer UV protection for your home furnishings. Decide if you want the treatments to blend in or be the focal point of the room. Also determine if you need vertical or horizontal treatments. Finally, think about how you want them to control the light—should they deflect or diffuse it? If you want deflected light, go with plantation shutters or blinds. If you want diffused light, go with roman shades. For a combination, try something like Hunter Douglas Silhouette® window shadings and Hunter Douglas Duette® honeycomb shades.
