If you’re in the market for shutters or blinds, you’ve probably noticed that you can find lines made in different materials—both genuine and faux wood—and you might be curious about what would be best for your home. At Altra Home Décor serving the greater Phoenix area, we want to ensure that you get the product that will work best for you, so read on to learn more, and speak with one of our representatives to get advice on your particular situation.

About Genuine Wood

You might have noticed products such as Hunter Douglas Heritance® Hardwood Shutters and Parkland® Wood Blinds, which are made of genuine wood that offers a one-of-a-kind look. With genuine wood, you can choose from numerous slat sizes and a variety of colors and stains to match your overall look. Their lighter weight (50% lighter than comparable faux wood blinds) makes them easier to maneuver, and they can be built for larger window openings. Parkland Wood Blinds are great for specialty shaped windows such as arches, angles, circles, cut-outs, and more. And, to really complement your décor, you can select from numerous decorative tapes. However, genuine wood also comes with some drawbacks. For example, it can warp in rooms that have high moisture, such as a bathroom, and children and pets can tax its sturdiness. Also, it’s about 30 percent more expensive than its faux cousin.

About Faux Wood

If you’ve looked at products such as EverWood® Alternative Wood Blinds, Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ Shutters, or NewStyle® Hybrid Shutters, you’ve seen that they are durable and affordable. They tend to be resistant to high moisture and UV rays (which, given our 300 days of sunshine a year, is highly important here)—they won’t crack, chip, peel, warp, or bow. You can select from numerous colors and stains to coordinate with your décor, and many can fit in specialty shaped windows. These beauties will look just as good as the real thing, but they cost less; plus, they’re easy to clean—simply wipe with a damp cloth. However, faux wood might not be the right choice for you. It’s heavier than genuine wood, and not all faux wood products can be sized for larger window openings. Be sure to speak with a trained consultant to see if faux wood is right for your needs.
