Making Over a Room

Storage and Craft Room

Making over (or initially decorating) a room can seem daunting. However, it can be helpful to remember that, as long as you’re comfortable with the space, you can’t go wrong. At Altra Home Décor serving the greater Phoenix area, we’ll be more than happy to help you with some tips on how to approach your room makeover. Read on to learn more!

Your Walls

Generally speaking, walls are the biggest part of a room, so it makes sense to put your focus there first. Choose a color that will set the tone—neutrals like cream, beige, and gray can help make a good background for other elements of your decoration or design to pop. Or choose brighter colors to draw the eye. When you add artwork, tailor the placement to where the human eye will be the most comfortable. Even if you have very high ceilings, keep the art at eye level for greater comfort. To help you arrange the artwork in a pleasing way, you can take a picture of the wall and use an app or drawing feature to map out how to fill the area.

Your Furniture

The way you arrange your furniture will impact the flow and therefore overall feel of a room. Try not to crowd the space by letting each piece breathe. Select elements that will help the function of the room. For example, if you plan to entertain in the space, be sure to account for places where your guests can set drinks. If you add an area rug (which alone will go a long way to making over the space), consider how to arrange your furniture on it. Depending on the rug’s size, you can place the furniture entirely on it, entirely off it, or with just the front feet on it.

Lighting

Natural light can impact the feel of a room, so use it to your advantage. If your windows face south, for example, you’ll get plenty of direct light throughout the day, so you might want to have a window treatment that blocks it, such as shutters like Heritance® Wood Shutters from Hunter Douglas. Or you might choose something that will help beautifully diffuse light, such as Silhouette® Window Shadings. Also think about layers of lighting—after all, even if you have lots of windows, you’ll need some backup lighting for nighttime hours. Have lighting that works for the way the room is used—brighter lighting for a workspace and more soothing lighting for a bedroom. Central lighting fixtures, plus the light let in by your window treatments, should work together to create dramatic results in your rooms. Professionals build layers of lighting to create interest, intrigue, and variety. In a room where everything is lit evenly, nothing stands out.

Interior Design Final Tips

If you want to use a theme in your room or entire home, go for it—it can help you focus your look. However, be careful about going too far with it. For example, beach themes are sometimes so overdone they lack uniqueness. Make your theme your own with distinctive twists for a one-of-a-kind makeover. And don’t be afraid to go outside the “norm.” Making over your room lets you create a fresh look that’s tailored to your tastes. Feel free to be bold and choose things that are comfortable to you.
