If you’re unhappy with the way your room (or entire home) looks but don’t have the budget for a full-on revamp of the interior design, don’t worry. At Altra Home Décor serving the greater Phoenix area, we have a few ideas for how you can alter the look and feel of a space without breaking the bank—and without taking up too much of your time. Check them out below!

Rearrange the Furniture

It sounds simple—and it really is! Changing the layout of a space can greatly impact how it appears to the eye and how you feel about it overall. Moving furniture could create a new traffic flow in the room, and even open up space for a different use. You might be surprised at what you can accomplish without even buying any new pieces!

Incorporate Nature

Whether you feel like you have a green thumb or not, you can add houseplants (live or artificial) to bring in a sense of the outdoors, add a splash of color, and tie together an entire look. Plants can help make any room look and feel more inviting, elevate the space, and help tie to nature’s own aesthetic.

Coordinate Accent Colors

You can increase the drama of a room simply by ensuring that all popping accents are the same color. Coordinate among your drapery or curtains, floor rugs, throw blankets, and décor items like vases or artwork to create a unified look throughout the room. If the space has a predominantly neutral color, consider using a bold, bright color for the accent.

Upgrade Your Throw Pillows

Are your throw pillows looking drab, listless, or dull? You don’t have to replace them entirely to get a new life from them. Simply buy or make new covers for them! You might be amazed at how versatile your throw pillows can be if you add fringe, change up a pattern, or add a new color to your room. And you’ll love the fresh new look in the space.

Add an Area Rug

An area rug can spice a room up quickly. It can be colorful, textured, fluffy, or traditional, and you’ll see that it will make the space warmer and more inviting. Use the rug to define a specific area, make a conversation zone cozier, or coordinate a look.

Play With Lighting

Find an interesting lamp to create a new focal point in the room. If you find that your local lighting stores are too expensive, be sure to scope out what’s on offer at thrift stores—you might be surprised the gems you could find. Or if a new lamp isn’t the thing, consider using colored bulbs to spice up the lighting. You can use the new bulbs in just one area to draw attention to that wall.

Use Drapery to Resize the Room

How you install drapery can impact the room’s appearance. If you keep the rod close to the ceiling, the room will appear taller. If you place the rod’s mounting brackets four to six inches outside of the window frame, you’ll be able to fully open the drapery and make the window seem wider. Be sure the drapery length works for the room: if it appears too short, it will minimize the space. Longer drapery (breaking just above the floor or puddling on the ground) will elongate a room. Note: if you’re working with existing drapery and are afraid you won’t have the length to move your rod toward the ceiling, add a coordinating valance to give you the extra inches.
