Contemporary Style

Although “contemporary” is a synonym of “modern,” the two styles aren’t the same. Contemporary design is for people who like to work with trending pieces and styles. Modern, however, is based in the mid-1900s. With contemporary style, you’ll see more softening: rounded, clean lines and a base of neutral colors (with pops of color in accents). It is simple and sophisticated, with updated materials and trending textures and shapes. Here are some ways to bring contemporary style to your home:

  • Add neutral colors, such as beige, gray, white, and cream, to your walls. You can use black as a grounding color. Once you’ve got neutrals as your base, you can add pops of color in your accessories, artwork, or window fashions. Alternatively, if you choose to make your walls a bright color, you should use neutrals everywhere else.
  • Add texture to the space. You can use metal, stone, or glass, or textiles such as silk, wool, linen, or cotton. Textured materials are great for accent pillows or rugs. You can also add textures at the window in your treatments. Consider Provenance® Woven Woods, which are made from natural reeds, woods, grass, and bamboo, to add nature to the room.
  • Declutter your space. You’ll note that contemporary design is streamlined and minimal—if you’ve got every piece of décor you own out there, it might not be exactly minimal. Sort through your décor and keep only the pieces you love. Your space will feel updated and fresh.
  • Be sure that your lighting is working for you. You want it to add depth and create visual impact. Have light sources from all over—above and below, as well as from the window. The right window treatment can control light just the way you want, leaving the room the striking statement you’re going for.
