Understanding Window Treatment Types

Duette® Honeycomb Shades
Duette® Honeycomb Shades

At Altra Home Décor serving the greater Phoenix area, we throw a lot of terms around without really thinking about it because they’re second nature to us. But we understand that the terms might seem foreign to our clients. That’s why we’re offering this primer to the various types of treatments you might hear about—and if you’re interested in learning more or seeing some of them in person, be sure to contact one of our representatives today!

Cellular Shades

Also called “honeycomb shades” because of their unique honeycomb-shaped design, cellular shades, such as Duette® Cellular Shades from Hunter Douglas, are best known for their insulating properties. Their pocket-like construction helps keep outside air out and inside air in, which can help with energy bills. That same construction is also good for sound absorption.

Roman Shades

The Roman Shade is simple yet alluring—it’s one piece of fabric that folds as the cord is pulled to lift it. Vignette® Modern Roman Shades offer no exposed rear cords, beautiful fabrics, and a clean, contemporary look. You’ll find good insulation at the window as well as a variety of styling options.

Roller Shades

Great for minimalist styles, roller shades offer clean lines and small light gaps. With their sleek aesthetic and large fabric selection, roller shades can complement just about any room. Plus, they offer a number of light-filtering options. And, if your room gets lots of direct sunlight (such as a south-facing window), you’ll love the UV protection that roller shades can bring.

Plantation Shutters

Classic yet modern, shutters can add definition, elegance, and sophistication to a room and even help with a home’s resale value. Hunter Douglas offers several types of shutters, including Heritance® Hardwood Shutters, Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ Vinyl Shutters, and NewStyle® Composite Shutters. Each offers a variety of benefits, and all will look amazing in your home.

Cornices and Valances

Some clients like to complete a look with a cornice or a valance. Cornices are solid fixtures that adorn the top of your window. Cornices can offer a very refined feel, with a structured design. They’re made of wood or fiberboard, and you have them upholstered or painted to match your room’s décor style. Valances are more casual than cornices. They’re made of fabric draped across the window top, adding warmth and texture to the window design. Much more flexible than cornices, valances offer a wide range of styling options; they come in a vast number of patterns and colors and can be ruffled or pleated to suit a look.

Layering

To add even more emphasis to the beauty of the new window, layer your blind or shade with coordinating drapery or side panels to add drama, dimension, texture, and depth while framing the window in an elegant way.
