If you’re lucky enough to have a bay window, you know how much it can add to your home. From a panoramic view to much natural light to a cozy nook to enjoy coffee and the morning paper, the bay window is more than an architectural delight—it’s an important aspect to the look and feel of your home. Which is why you should be thoughtful about how you add window treatments. At Altra Home Décor serving the greater Phoenix area, we can offer the right advice to get you the treatments that are just right for your bay window.

The First Steps in Treating a Bay Window

First decide if you want to treat the windows as one large unit or three separate windows—the biggest difference is where the treatments are positioned, either inside the window molding our outside of it. The position of your bay window within your home will dictate how much light control you need. It will also determine how accessible you want the outside view. Here are a few solutions you may want to consider to dress your bay windows.

One Coordinated Unit

If you decide to treat your bay as one unit, you have several choices. For example, Design Studio™ Roman Shades from Hunter Douglas could be the perfect solution. You can create the same effect with other shade styles, like Provenance® Woven Wood Shades or Duette® honeycomb shades from Hunter Douglas, as long as they are mounted outside the molding and meet at the edges.

Separate Window Treatments

If you dress each window individually. The opposite of treating windows in unison, these treatments are designed not to touch at the edges, but instead to inhabit the space within the window frame. Plantation shutters like Heritance® hardwood shutters or NewStyle® hybrid shutters by Hunter Douglas are a great option when installed inside the molding to cover the bottom of each window.

Adding Fabric

If you want to add a pop of color or texture, you can always add fabric to your bay window space. For example, you could choose drapery—when the drapery panels are open, they become a decorative picture frame for the outside view. When closed, they turn your space into a snug nook. Or, you could do curtains on each window, one on the left, one where the windows join, one where the other windows join, and one on the outside. Hanging multiple curtains warms the space. If you do decide to add fabric to your bay windows, don’t forget to coordinate the drapery or valance with your seat cushions and pillows!
