Soundproofing for Your Home

If your home has unwanted noise, you might be feeling some stress from it—and the source can be anything from loud neighbors to a busy nearby street. Reducing the noise in your home can be the key to improving your quality of life. At Altra Home Décor serving the greater Phoenix area, we understand the importance of having a peaceful environment, so we’d like to offer some soundproofing tips. Check them out below!
Reducing Sound Levels
You can do a few things both inside your home to reduce the amount of unnecessary sound you experience. If you have hollow doors, for example, you can replace them with solid-core doors to block sound. Use weatherstripping to seal gaps around your door frames and a door sweep on the external doors to block noise leaks. To absorb sound, consider adding acoustic panels or fabric wall hangings, or if you’re interested in something more heavy duty, double up your drywall. To reduce floor-accentuated vibrations, use cork, rubber, or foam under your flooring. And to reduce noise from upper floors, you can add acoustic tiles to the ceiling.
Window Treatments
Windows can be a big culprit in advancing sound through a home, so it makes sense to consider certain window treatments to help reduce it. Because they add a layer to the glass, all window treatments block noise to a certain degree; however, a few actively absorb sound and truly reduce unwanted noise. One of the best bets is finding a honeycomb-style shade, like Hunter Douglas Duette® Cellular Shades and Sonnette® Cellular Shades. By their very nature, these shades, with their honeycomb construction that traps air and sound, insulate the windows and greatly reduce noise in the room. Another excellent option is the Roman shade, like Hunter Douglas Providence® Woven Wood Shades and Vignette® Modern Roman Shades. These products provide great aesthetics as well as sophistication and timeless appeal. For vertical options like sliders or walls of windows, Cadence® Vertical Blinds can be a good solution—they offer the look of plush drapery folds and are available in a number of fabric and color selections. Depending on your goals for the window treatments, these options will help you create a more comfortable, less noisy living space. To see them in person, contact one of our representatives today!
