Outdoor Living Spaces

Designer Screen Shades

At Altra Home Décor serving the greater Phoenix area, we know that many people want to make the most of their outdoor areas to expand what they have inside. But it can be overwhelming to determine exactly what to do. We’ve got a few things to think about below—check it out!

Decide on Your Goals

First determine your goals for the area, whether it’s to entertain, to add living space for your family, or to create a private garden escape. Then, no matter your goals, start by treating the space the same way you would an interior room—measure it, graph it out, and plan for what you want to involve. For example, if you want to entertain, consider how much seating your space can hold, and be sure the seating you’re considering will fit in the area.

Think of Elements to Add

Is your space too sunny? Consider a pergola or sturdy umbrellas. Too windy? Maybe you could add some sort of barrier—a hedge or a wind wall. Plan on spending cool evenings or nights out there? You can find plenty of firepit options or overhead heaters. For hard surfaces, consider an outdoor rug—for beauty, to set the area apart, and for comfort. Smaller spaces can appear larger if you add tiers—a raised plant bed or even large potted plants can give your area an element of greater size. Lighting could help as well. If you will use your space in the evening or at night, you’ll appreciate light for safety and to set the mood. Walkway lighting (much of which you can find solar-powered), party lights, or even strings of lights could do just the trick.

Hunter Douglas Can Help

Designer screen shades from Hunter Douglas can help define the area, create shade, and give you UV ray protection. Plus, they can offer a good sense of privacy to the area. And if your outdoor living area borders your home, you might need to adjust the window treatments inside too—if you’ve added a shade element outside, perhaps simply draperies will do inside, for example. No matter the case, if your situation inside has changed because you changed your situation outside, consider upgrading your current window treatments—be sure to speak with one of our specialists for ideas!
