About Blinds, Shades, and Shutters

Window coverings are differentiated by their opacity, look, and feel.

  • Shades offer fashionable design, energy efficiency, UV ray protection, room-darkening features, privacy, and a clean, soft look. Shade fabrics range from man-made materials to natural sustainable materials like bamboo or even recycled ocean trash (the Hunter Douglas GreenScreen® Sea-Tex™ screen shade fabric) and are available in the greatest selection of colors, styles, textures, and options. Some Hunter Douglas shades are available with technology for extended light and privacy control. For example, adding LightLock™ to Duette® Honeycomb Shades gives you a unique system of side channels designed to trap and deflect light, leaving your room in complete darkness. Duolite® on Vignette® Modern Roman Shades, Silhouette® Shadings, or Duette® Honeycomb Shades gives you both a light-filtering and a room-darkening fabric on the one shade, so you can control light and privacy even more.
  • Blinds work well in horizontal and vertical openings as well as in specialty shapes. An affordable window treatment, blinds come in aluminum, vinyl, wood, faux wood, and fabric in hundreds of colors, styles, and options to complement any room or décor style. One drawback to blinds is that they’re naturally constructed with cord holes that allow bits of sunlight through. If you want to purchase blinds but want as dark a solution as possible, check out the Hunter Douglas de-Light™ feature, which eliminates the cord holes.
  • Shutters are a classic option that pairs well with any décor style. Shutters are the most expensive of the three window treatment types, yet they can also help increase the value of your home. You can choose genuine or faux wood, depending on your needs. Genuine wood—used in products such as Hunter Douglas Heritance® Hardwood Shutters and Parkland® Wood Blinds—offers unique characteristics that can appeal to people who want a one-of-a-kind look. Products made of faux wood tend to be resistant to high moisture and UV rays—they won’t crack, chip, peel, warp, or bow.

Lift Systems

The lift system you choose will depend on your needs. A few options include:

  • UltraGlide®, a retractable cord system that lets you raise and lower your shades with no ugly, dangling external cords.
  • LiteRise®, a cordless system that lets you gently raise and lower your shades with slight pressure from your hand.
  • PowerView® motorization, a wireless operating system that can be used with a PowerView® Pebble® remote or with your mobile device or tablet, even if you’re not at home.
