Why Cover Basement Windows?

There are plenty of reasons—and options—for covering basement windows. Even if your basement isn’t finished, it’s possible you spend time there, whether that’s working out, using a workbench, managing your storage, or letting the kids play. Why not make that time feel less basement-y and more comfortable? Plus, with treatments on the windows, you’ll get more privacy, protection from UV rays, and insulation from the outdoor temps. And all of those things are compounded when you’re talking about a finished basement.

Make the Windows Look Taller

One of the issues people have with basement windows—especially in homes that were built more than a few decades ago—is that they’re the small openings that just look like rectangles at the top of the wall. But it’s easy enough to create a sense of height using window treatments. For example, you can mount long drapery over the window—when the drapery is closed, it gives the same feel as an upper-floor window. Plus, it adds pattern, texture, and a sense of style to the space. If you want to extend the window illusion when the drapery is open, consider mounting mirrors beneath the window to create a sense of additional glass. No matter what, be sure to hang the drapery close to the ceiling, especially if the ceiling is low—it will make it feel taller.

Use Custom Blinds or Shutters

Getting a covering that is made to fit your window exactly will result in a polished look, which helps in finished basements especially and particularly if we’re talking about those older, smaller windows. Blinds and shutters offer light control through tilting the mechanism; you can keep them closed for darkness if your basement is a media area or tilt them open to bring some cheer into a dark space. Parkland® Wood Blinds, EverWood® Faux Wood Blinds, and Heritance® Hardwood Shutters offer a classic look that can raise the aesthetics of the room.

Create Faux Windows

If you’re in the process of finishing your basement, you could consider creating false windows beside a current one. Simply build frames the same size as the real window and mount the same window treatments in them as in the real frame. The treatments on the faux windows will always remain closed, but you can open the one in the real window to let in light and help with the illusion. This styling choice can help give the room a greater sense of space, bring in additional patterns and textures, and add to the idea of the basement as a room like any of the upstairs ones. Use roller shades, Roman shades, or Provenance® Woven Wood Shades to add as feeling of whimsy to your basement.
