Use Color

A common color can pull two different styles together quickly. For example, add a coat of paint to your walls to easily bring pieces together. Or use your window treatments to tie it all up. Duette® Honeycomb Shades from Hunter Douglas are available in 39 different fabrics with a total of 424 colorways. Not only can you match or coordinate colors, this premium honeycomb collection has a wide selection of opacities and textures to choose from, which is perfect when combining design styles.

Change the Decorating Style

Sheer Shadings
Pirouette® Window Shadings in the Kitchen

Let’s say your current style is traditional. You probably find it comfortable and familiar. However, to prevent a traditional room from looking too stuffy and old-fashioned, just add something modern, such as brightly colored throw pillows and new modern window treatments. Pirouette® Window Shadings by Hunter Douglas are perfect in bridging the gap between traditional and modern styles. This window treatment’s unique design showcases soft horizontal fabric vanes attached to a single sheer backing. Raising or lowering the vanes so that they’re flat and more modern or contoured and more traditional can change the look of the room entirely.

The 80/20 Rule

A great way to approach blending styles is to stick to the 80/20 rule: one main style makes up 80% of the room’s décor, while the other style is 20%. Your main style would include the large pieces of furniture that are either hard to give up or hard to replace. The other 20% could be something that has a pop of color, texture, pattern, and more. Be sure to split up your items and distribute them evenly throughout the space.
