Do Your Homework When Selecting A Flooring Company

A homeowner finished a major home remodel job last year and in January they were finally ready to install new wood flooring. They asked us here at Altra Home Décor in Surprise, AZ, to provide a bid. Although the homeowner had worked with us before and knew we would have done a fantastic job, they decided to go with another company that offered a lower bid.

Six months later, the homeowner called Altra Home Décor to come out and take a look at the floor because it was already coming up. Upon inspection there were visible points that showed the installer had not been qualified to do this wood floor. It seemed to be floating in some spots and glued down in others. Additionally, the transitions were not meeting the tile and the corner moldings were not installed properly.

Costly, But Happy Ending to Flooring Mishap

Our qualified installers tore up the existing wood flooring and replaced it with Shaw Hudson Bay Random Plank flooring. This flooring created a stylish custom look by mixing widths to provide a cohesive, consistent designer look throughout the home. The flooring now looks and acts as it should with a much cleaner transition to their existing tile and correctly installed corner moldings.

Choosing Your Flooring Vendor

This is a cautionary tale. It may seem like you’re getting a good deal, but when going with someone who is not qualified to complete the job, the end result may not be what you expected.

The homeowner finally got the floor they had hoped for, but sadly a much higher cost. Doing a little homework up front will make your purchasing experience a better one. Choose wisely and ask…

• How long as the company been in business?
• Is the installer trained fully on the flooring you are having installed able to complete the finishing touches?
• Does the company offer warranties – installer and manufacturer?

Finally, ask your friends and family for referrals and/or go on-line and read what other homeowners are saying.
