Establishing a Focal Point in a Room

When you walk into a room, what do you see first, the walls or the windows? Did you know that color plays a large role in establishing the focal point of the room? Put color where you want your eye to go. If you add color to the window, that is what you will see first. If the window’s frame is white and the window treatment is also white, it will blend in, and the walls and accessories will be the focus. Talk to a trained consultant at Altra Home Décor. We’ve been working with customers all over the Phoenix area, and we’ll be happy to help you determine what works best for your home.

Color Changes With the Light

There is a new word in the industry called metamerism, which means that color changes under different lights. Because of that, color will change four times throughout the day. In the early morning, the light feels warm. At noon, the light coming through the window will be cool. In the early evening, with the sunset and colors of the evening sky, the light will be warm again. At night, we use artificial lighting. With all the different types of light bulbs today, that adds to the problem of knowing where to put color and what color to use.

Tips About Color

Here are a few things to consider:

  • Because you need to see it in all kinds of lighting, it’s best to live with a color for at least 48 hours before you make a decision for your walls and or windows. Use paint swatches on a wall or buy a yard of fabric to hang on the window.
  • Gold, orange, red-orange, red, and magenta have brown undertones and will blend into wood and make a space seem smaller. Black undertones such as purple, blue, indigo, green, and teal all enhance wood and visually expand space, making it look bigger. Yellow and Lime Green have white undertones and work well with either.
  • On a window, the general rule is to blend it in to the frame, especially the functioning window treatments that provide light control and privacy. If you feel the space is boring, contrasting window panels or valances can be added.
