Your Walls

In most homes, the walls make up the biggest part of the room, so it’s natural to focus there first. There are thousands of paint colors with various tints, tones, and shades. The natural light in your room can have a big impact on how your finished walls look. Before you start painting, take account of how your window treatments diffuse the light in the room at different times of the day.

Furniture

Furniture makes a huge impact on the feel and flow of your room. Try not to overcrowd the room, with space for your furniture to breathe. This is good news if you’re on a tight budget. Focus on quality over quantity.

Window Treatments

Designer Screen Shades & Coordinating Rug in the Bedroom

Once you have the walls done and furniture in place, think about protecting them from damaging UV rays. Blinds and shades such as Roman, honeycomb and roller shades come in a variety of opacities, colors and textures, whereas shutters provide total privacy and add a classic look. Draperies add softness to a room and come in hundreds of styles, textures and fabrics and can be used along or in combination with another window treatment. Selecting the right window treatment will allowing you to enjoy your home furnishings for years to come.  The possibilities are endless.

Rugs

Floor coverings alone can make over a room by adding color, texture, and visual interest. As you consider the size of rug you’re using in a specific room, remember that how the furniture is arranged on the rug will impact the overall look. If your rug is large enough to place all of the furniture legs on top of it, do it that way for more luxurious feel. Just be sure to leave at least 12 to 18 inches of floor surface on all four sides of the rug’s borders. In small rooms with smaller rugs, keep all legs off the rug. Don’t go too small with the rug, though, or it will look insignificant. When the sizing of both the room and the rug is just right, put just the front feet of your furniture on the rug. This will tie everything together and define the space.

Artwork

When it comes to hanging your artwork, remember that the average human eye level is 57 inches off the floor. Even in rooms with really high ceilings, keep your artwork at eye level to create a room tailored to the people in it. Here’s a great tip: If you’re not sure, take a picture. It’s remarkable how much a photo can reveal. Print it out or use an app to draw on the photo. This can give you a sense of whether a larger or smaller piece of art is needed or a tall plant might be best to fill a vacant spot.
