At Altra Home Décor here in Phoenix, many of our customers want to add color to their homes, but they’re not sure how to start. Luckily—it’s not that hard, and we’ve got some tips to get you started. Read on to learn more!

Creating a Uniform Look

If you want a uniform look to your room, start with the floor and go very neutral. Choose colors that will visually expand the space and blend throughout the room. For example, try a soft off-white to light beige or tan for the floor. For the walls, go with a restful gray-green, and for the window coverings, select Hunter Douglas Pirouette® window shadings to match the walls.

Color or Neutral for Window Treatments?

In each of its collections, Hunter Douglas offers an extensive color palette, as well as a large group of neutrals to select from. Generally, be aware that colored window treatments will jump out and be noticed first. Choosing whites or off-whites makes changing other colors in the room easier. A few popular Hunter Douglas Window treatments include:

  • Custom shutters, which are available in wood, faux wood, and polysatin™ materials. They come in custom paint colors as well as stains and neutrals.
  • Duette® Honeycomb Shades, which are available in hundreds of colors and textures in sheer, semi-sheer, semi-opaque, opaque, and blackout fabrics.
  • Silhouette® window shadings, which are offered in neutrals and pastels to soft hues.

What About the Ceiling?

If you don’t want to add color to the walls or windows, consider the ceiling! You could go with the black undertone colors of blues, greens, lime greens, teals, and purples to recede the space. If the ceiling is only 8 feet high, it will look taller and your window treatments will recede into the space and not be noticed as much. Or go with the brown undertone colors of yellow, gold, orange, red-orange, red, and magenta to bring the ceiling height down and make the room feel cozier. Remember, if you put color on either a wall or the ceiling, the higher the finish of the paint, the more imperfections will stand out. Use a flat finish on the ceiling for a more elegant look.
